FUKUSHIMA HAMADORI COASTAL AREA

Shufusha Café and Gallery

This casual café and gallery is located in Kawauchi, a forested rural village with a population of just over 2,000. It is the brainchild its owner/chef Shiga Fuka, who was born and grew up here before departing for university with thoughts of returning. She opened this café in 2023, determined to help maintain the community by appealing to young people like herself and promoting the benefits of a natural lifestyle. The building itself is a 200-year-old traditional folk house that was moved to Kawauchi from Iwaki some 30 years ago. She and her father, a potter, did the renovation, including making traditional walls from mud and thatch with the help of local students. She also took advantage of a grant from the Hamadori Phoenix Project that encourages young people’s ideas on the area’s recovery and reconstruction. The café serves home-made light meals and drinks made from local ingredients that are in season. Shufusha (“home of the autumn wind”) has become a popular hang-out for locals and visitors alike, to share conversation and information.
