FUKUSHIMA HAMADORI COASTAL AREA

Kawauchi Winery

Kawauchi Winery, a winemaking facility that is a symbol of the village’s reconstruction, opened in June, 2021, after years of preparation. Much of the work was done by volunteers from the village and elsewhere, who helped clear the land and plant the first 2000 grape seedlings in April 2016. Today, there are about 13,500 grape vines on a the 4-hectare Takatajima Vineyard where its grapes are harvested is located on a south-facing slope at an altitude of about 750 meters, with a great view of the surrounding Abukuma mountains. The main varieties grown here are Chardonnay, for a white wine, and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (for red wines). Including experimental plantings, there are a total of 30 varieties. Production in the first year reached approximately 11,000 bottles of white, red, rosé and sparkling wines. They included the Village series, produced with grapes grown here, and the Liber series, produced with grapes from Hokkaido and Yamagata prefectures. In the future, Kawauchi Winery plans to take advantage of the scenic location by building a restaurant and other facilities for visitors to stay and enjoy wining and dining next to the winery.
