FUKUSHIMA HAMADORI COASTAL AREA

Azalea: Katsurao Village Reconstruction and Community Center

This facility in the middle of the village of Katsurao was constructed as a symbol of reconstruction following the evacuation of the whole community after the earthquake and nuclear accident of March, 2011. Its purpose was to enrich the lives of the residents, to disseminate information and create opportunities for interaction between the local people and visitors. It is a gathering place for locals to relax, and includes a children’s space, as well as areas for concerts. It is equipped with wi-fi for those who would like to use it as a work space. And it is the venue for the Tour de Katsurao, an annual bicycle race tournament held in the spring that attracts riders from all over the country. Bicycles can also be rented at the facility. Local produce is on sale here, including rice cakes, soba noodles and sweet sake. On Thursdays between April and December, a direct sales store sells freshly picked local vegetables. The village’s official flower was chosen as the name of the center, which won a Good Design Special Award in 2020.
